The 5th Expedition Annotated
TL;DR
Quest resets are now optional, the departure window stretches to three weeks, and Expeditions pause entirely after this cycle until early 2027, what Embark's 5th Expedition announcement actually changes.
Draft: this page has not cleared review and is not indexed.
This isn't a numbered Live Update. It's Embark's own announcement post for the 5th Expedition cycle (published August 21, 2026, three days after Live Update 1.42.0), and it changes how the Expedition system itself behaves rather than a weapon stat or a map. Annotated by section below.
Quest reset
From the official announcement (paraphrased): quest progress is now optional to reset on departure. Players can choose to keep their quest-line progress on the new Raider instead of starting the quest tree over. Embark specifically called out the Hullcracker Blueprint, previously quest-line-only, as getting an alternate acquisition path.
This removes the single most-cited reason players delayed triggering an Expedition even once their Caravan was ready. Nobody wanted to re-grind a multi-trader quest chain from zero on top of the level/stash/Workshop reset that was already mandatory. If you were sitting on a finished Caravan specifically because of the quest reset, that's no longer the blocker it was.
Departure window
From the official announcement (paraphrased): the departure window extends from two weeks to three (September 8-29 for this cycle), and the "Last Call" grace period is removed entirely. Miss the window and you miss the Expedition, with no late-signup buffer.
Net effect is mixed, not a straight buff: more calendar time to actually hit the sign-up window, but a harder cutoff once it closes. Treat the extra week as schedule flexibility, not as permission to leave signing up until the last possible day. There's no fallback if you do.
Expeditions pausing after this cycle
From the official announcement (paraphrased): the 5th Expedition is the last one until early 2027, while Embark works on what it describes as fundamental redesigns to the system.
This is the headline item for anyone still deciding whether to build toward this cycle at all. Miss the September 8-29 window and the next opportunity isn't a few weeks out, it's next year. If your Caravan is close to Departure-ready, this cycle is the one to finish it for.
From the official announcement (paraphrased): buffs earned through consecutive Expeditions (repair cost, XP, and material-yield bonuses) stay active through the pause period rather than expiring while there's no active cycle to renew them in.
You don't lose your accumulated streak bonuses just because the system goes quiet. There's no urgency to "use them before they expire" during the pause.
From the official announcement (paraphrased): Caravans left incomplete when the pause begins convert to "Ermal Vouchers" of equivalent value, redeemable for purchases or coin conversion, rather than being lost outright.
If your Caravan isn't going to reach Departure before the window closes, the materials you already committed aren't wasted. They convert rather than evaporate. That changes the math on whether to rush an unfinished build versus letting it convert cleanly.
Common misconception
"Expeditions are being removed" overstates what Embark actually said. The system isn't being cut. It's pausing after one more completed cycle while the underlying design gets reworked, with an early-2027 return already stated. The urgency here is about this specific window, not about the feature's long-term future.
