EU5 Patch 1.4 'Río Salado', Annotated

TL;DR

Patch 1.4 'Río Salado' is in beta with no official changelog yet. This page holds the confirmed scope (Catholicism updates, expeditions, Decisions, Iberia flavor) and fills in once Paradox ships. Ambitions was moved out of 1.4 to a later 'Discovery' update.

Draft: this page has not cleared review and is not indexed.

The version banner above reads 1.3.11, the current stable release, because 1.4 doesn't have a final build number yet while it's in beta. Treat this whole page as covering the 1.4 "Río Salado" beta, not 1.3.11 itself.

This page is a skeleton, published ahead of the actual patch on purpose. Patch 1.4 "Río Salado" is in open beta as of this writing. Paradox hasn't shipped an official, final changelog yet, so there is no verbatim patch-note text to annotate. What follows is the confirmed scope from Paradox's own pre-release communication (Tinto Talks dev diaries, official beta announcements), organized the same way our annotated patch pages always are, so the real changelog drops straight into a page that's already built rather than starting from a blank document once it ships.

Confirmed scope: Catholicism updates

From Tinto Talks #117 (2026-07-22) and #121 (2026-08-19), paraphrased: Catholicism is named on Paradox's own pre-beta preview schedule (week of August 12th: "Catholics, Expeditions & Content") and again in Tinto Talks #121 as one of the areas still to cover before beta. Paradox has not yet detailed what changes; no Tinto Talks post in the feed names Crusades or Jihads as part of this rework, so we don't repeat that claim here.

Watch this section if you're running a Catholic power. We'll fill in the actual mechanics the moment Paradox's own Catholicism-focused Tinto Talk lands, rather than guess ahead of them.

Confirmed scope: Expedition system

From Tinto Talks #121, "Expeditions" (2026-08-19), paraphrased: a new expedition system shipping with 1.4, covering journeys like the Great Pilgrimage to Jerusalem, the Royal Hajj to Mecca, circumnavigation, and the Middle Kingdom's Treasure Fleet, with some expeditions exclusive to the Across the Pillars DLC. Still under active development and iteration as of that post.

If your plans depend on a specific expedition being free-to-all rather than DLC-gated, that split isn't finalized yet. We'll confirm the exact division once Paradox does.

From Tinto Talks #117 (2026-07-22), paraphrased: Ambitions is not part of 1.4. Paradox stated directly, "Ambitions will not come with 1.4," moving it instead to a future, not-yet-numbered update they're calling Discovery, targeted for late 2027, alongside a content-delivery-system overhaul and a Colonization rework. Any earlier roadmap graphic showing Ambitions inside 1.4 is, in Paradox's own words, "not yet up to date."

If you were holding off starting a long campaign specifically to play with Ambitions once 1.4 landed, don't: it's over a year further out than 1.4. See our upcoming patches and DLC roadmap for where Ambitions now sits alongside Discovery's other confirmed scope.

Confirmed scope: Decisions system (first iteration)

From Tinto Talks #120, "Decisions & Content Tab" (2026-08-12), paraphrased: the first iteration of a Decisions system, an EU4-familiar feature returning to EU5, coming in the 1.4 "Río Salado" update.

EU4 veterans know Decisions as a major flavor and min-max lever. A first iteration in EU5 is worth watching for scope: whether it launches broad (many nations) or narrow (a handful of flagship decisions for major powers) changes how much campaign-planning weight to put on it immediately versus waiting for it to mature over a patch or two.

Confirmed scope: Iberia flavor

From Tinto Talks #118, "Introducing 1.4 + Miscellaneous Changes" (2026-07-29), paraphrased: update 1.4 is explicitly "not focused on colonization, but rather a pre-1500s Iberia," consistent with the "Río Salado" codename referencing a 14th-century Iberian battle. Paradox has not named the Maghreb specifically anywhere in its 1.4 communication so far; we don't repeat that claim here.

Directly relevant to our Castile and Portugal guides, both of which start in Iberia. Once the real notes ship, expect updates to those pages' opening-plan sections if new flavor events or decisions change the optimal early moves.

Confirmed scope: Population growth rework

From Tinto Talks #118, "Introducing 1.4 + Miscellaneous Changes" (2026-07-29), paraphrased: population growth will come from actual food surplus rather than hoarded stockpiles; spare land will no longer speed growth on its own; growth will slow near capacity, and overcrowded locations will lose people; large cities and harsh winters will more sharply reduce local food production, scaled by settlement size; a new Village Granary building adds a rural food store buildable without a town; and hospitals and medical buildings will no longer make a location totally immune to disease, with built-up resistance capped instead.

This replaces two of the levers our population growth explainer currently lists as strongest under 1.3.11 (stored-food duration and free land under capacity) with a surplus-driven model. If your opening plans for a location lean on either lever, expect the specifics to change once 1.4 ships; the explainer page tracks exactly which rows are affected.

What happens when 1.4 actually ships

The moment Paradox publishes the final 1.4 changelog, this page gets rewritten from the top: real .official quotes replace the pre-release summaries above, with a fresh summary at the top. Until then, treat everything above as "confirmed direction, not confirmed mechanics": genuinely useful for planning what to watch for, not a substitute for the real notes.
